about
The opposite of ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’, the good guy metaphorically dies. The song uses swung rhythms to move like a horse walking along a trail. It includes the lyric that we used for the title of the album, "Ten Paces."
lyrics
Late in the evening
Do I play on your mind?
It’s when I really need you, harder to find
You don’t seem to try
Oh, knock on my window
Blow the dust off my mind
I found my ride beside you
And I wrapped my coat around you
You’re in my picture
Where the good surely die
I took my ride beside you
I took ten paces from you
This is the part
Where the good surely die
And when you told me
That you needed some space
I made some distance
As you made up your case
I thought it was brave
To take all our feelings and then leave them to fate
Harder, harder, harder to face
Harder, harder, losing my way, leave it to fate, oh
I found my ride beside you
And I wrapped my coat around you
You’re in my picture
Where the good surely die
I took my ride beside you
I took ten paces from you
This is the part
Where the good surely die
Harder, harder, harder to face
Harder, harder, leave it to fate, oh
I found my ride beside you
And I wrapped my coat around you
You’re in my picture
Where the good surely die
I took my ride beside you
I took ten paces from you
This is the part
Where the good surely die

Honestly not my usual fare, but I'm glad I risked treading outside my more well-trodden scenes to unearth this marvellously faceted gem! There really is something for everyone on this, the vocalist is a verbal shapeshifter and the folksy/bluesy quality of the music makes it sound somehow zany and saturnine all at once. Ben Harris
Released in 2001, “The Convincer” is a gentle gem in the Nick Lowe catalog; an anniversary edition provides opportunity for rediscovery. Bandcamp New & Notable Sep 20, 2021
Erudite chamber pop that hearkens back to the elegant and experimental production of the 1960s, swinging from melancholia to playfulness. Bandcamp New & Notable May 13, 2016

I've been listening to this album, and others, for a while but the live performances of 'Firecracker' and 'Wild Turkey' , as well ad 'Darlin' Cory', at the Transatlantic Sessions show at the RFH was another level. Live music is the best. The whole concert was insanely good. Shame not to hear 'Black Myself' in that setting but it was all near perfection as it was. oldjembo
