about
The flooding of Henry’s basement inspired the lyrics, so there’s a lot of anxiety built into them. It was initially slow and ballad-like, then we doubled up the tempo. Finally, we settled on a chopped-up version of both to add twists and turns and ultimately increase the unnerving quality. A small wooden cabin set was built for the music video to represent the claustrophobic feeling that the song creates, emphasized further by a narrow aspect ratio.
lyrics
Can I take you home baby?
No it’s not late but lately
All the people outside
Make me want to go and hide
Laughter, love and joy and hope
Hanging from a shiny rope
That wraps around my neck my dear
I try to bottle up my fears
When I’m comfy in my bed
Comfy in my home
Lock the door so we’re all alone
Comfy in my bed
Like a coffin in the ground
Bury me deep, 6 feet down
So won’t you stay here, please don’t go dear
You’re my teddy bear
Pillow in the air
Help me sleep with no despair
But when you’re gone
Skeleton and bone
And the ghosts they ride and roam
It’s the fear in me
Oh the fear in me
Oh the fear you’ll leave
Oh the fear, dear
Oh the fear in me
Oh the fear you’ll leave
As the world bleeds
Feel the fear, fear in me
The pace at which they move is frightening
Too much all the time like lightning
People all around the globe
Beat my brain, overload
They walk and talk with traffic heavy
Smoke and signals blink unsteady
All my worries flurry by
I watch the world slowly die
And I’m comfy in my bed
Comfy in my home
You can rock my twilight zone
Comfy in my bed
Like a coffin in the ground
Bury me deep, six feet down
So won’t you stay here, please don’t go dear
You’re my teddy bear
Pillow in the air
Help me sleep with no despair
But when you’re gone
Skeleton and bone
And the ghosts they ride and roam
It’s the fear in me
Oh the fear in me
Oh the fear you’ll leave
Oh the fear, dear
Oh the fear in me
Oh the fear you’ll leave
As the world bleeds
Feel the fear, fear in me

Siblings Henry and Rupert Stansall are from the small industrial town of Scunthorpe, England and have been recording
together as Ruen Brothers since 2013. The brothers’ journey has taken them from the ‘£ a pint’ pubs of Scunthorpe to the dizzying heights of festival stages such as Bonnaroo, Glastonbury and Coachella, to performing opening sets for Orville Peck, Nikki Lane and Greta Van Fleet....more
Honestly not my usual fare, but I'm glad I risked treading outside my more well-trodden scenes to unearth this marvellously faceted gem! There really is something for everyone on this, the vocalist is a verbal shapeshifter and the folksy/bluesy quality of the music makes it sound somehow zany and saturnine all at once. Ben Harris
Released in 2001, “The Convincer” is a gentle gem in the Nick Lowe catalog; an anniversary edition provides opportunity for rediscovery. Bandcamp New & Notable Sep 20, 2021
Erudite chamber pop that hearkens back to the elegant and experimental production of the 1960s, swinging from melancholia to playfulness. Bandcamp New & Notable May 13, 2016
I've been listening to this album, and others, for a while but the live performances of 'Firecracker' and 'Wild Turkey' , as well ad 'Darlin' Cory', at the Transatlantic Sessions show at the RFH was another level. Live music is the best. The whole concert was insanely good. Shame not to hear 'Black Myself' in that setting but it was all near perfection as it was. oldjembo
